si no tienes ninguna partición en el disco duro poniendo el live cd te arranca desde el y cuando arranque le das a instalar y pone como quieres instalar compartida o utilizar el espacio libre mas grande .... el live cd tiene el gparted por si quieres poner tu una partición expresamente .. Lo instala y una vez instalada cuando arranques te saldrá el multiboot diciendo si quieres entrar en ubuntu o xp

De esta forma, habilitas los plugins, deshabilitas la información de depuración, la cual sólo es útil para informes de error pero tiene como contrapartida que reduce el rendimiento....

Y con el parametro prefix configuras la aplicación para que se instale en /usr que es el directorio habitual de sistemas Debian y Ubuntu.
./configure --enable-plugins --disable-debug --prefix=/usr
Install directory:  /usr
